Schizophrenia
Labels:
Heavy Metal and procrastination
Some many many years ago a buddy of mine and I decided to ring a mutual friend of whom we knew that he worked very late hours at a local bar and would be fast asleep on a Saturday morning. We were all school-going age (I think us two miscreants might have still been in primary school while the other fellow was in secondary school already and played in a local Metal band who did covers of everything from Hendrix to Metallica). In any case we were obviously at a loss for something constructive to do and as pre-teens who can't think of anything constructive will inevitably turn to badness and destruction so did we and decided to ring this poor unfortunate drummer who was asleep after a late shift.
Anyway, we needed something to greet him with when he picked up the phone and I had the bright spark idea that we would play him the intro to Sepultura's *Schizophrenia* at great volume when his groggy ear hit the receiver. Now for those who don't know it, the intro to this album is the famous "shower-scene" music composed by Bernard Herrmann for the Hitchcock movie *Psycho*. But Sepultura added a nice touch to the end of this creepy bit of music and we hear the lead vocalist Max Cavalera letting out a mighty roar "UUUAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!" (or something similar).
We picked up the phone and dialled, tape recorder at the ready, eager fingers poised over the Play button. After many rings, groggy drummer answers: "Hello?" Hit Play! Shower-scene music! "Dwing dwing dwing dwing dwong dwong dwong dwong dwang dwang dwang dwang" it goes and then Max Cavalera: "UUUAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
Sleepy drummer, obviously completely confused and taken aback says: "What the FUCK was THAT?????"
